Fiercely inventive and philosophically inclined, her work occupies the uncertain territory between psychological realism, surrealism, and the metaphysical.

Shaped in part by her academic background in psychology and in part by her nomadic, fragmented childhood between the remote mountains in China and the countryside of Cambridge, Michelle's writing is marked by a lyrical, atmospheric sensibility, tinted with the themes of memory, identity and absence. In particular, she  is interested in the fragile relationship between perception and reality: how memory alters what we believe to be true, how consciousness shapes the world around us, and what remains when our familiar understanding of the self begins to dissolve. Her fiction moves through these questions obliquely, allowing the ordinary to become strange and the strange to feel intimately familiar.​
